How it all began…

In May 2008 Sarah & Angela Ruttle decided to take on the lease of a farm building to let shop units to create a new visitors centre comprising of a full time farmers market with fresh local produce, a craft and gift centre, licensed tea room, leading Art Gallery and high quality Butchers selling exotic meats such as water buffalo, venison & game (when available).

Between them they had a good mix of varied work experiences & education which would help them in taking up the challenge of setting up their own business.  They opened the doors in April 2010 and the centre has gone from strength to strength.

After expanding twice into further interlinked barns, creating much more space for further shops and businesses to open, Sarah & Angela decided it was time to rebrand the centre. In September 2018 the centre became a name that was much more apt…

“Our first few years have been a whirlwind! There have been so many ups and downs & many obstacles to get through, as there is with any business, but we are so pleased that the centre has become so successful so soon. We are so proud of all of the shops within the centre as there has been so much passion put into every single one of them by their owners. We will continue to promote the centre in every way we can & hope our customers, old & new, will enjoy their visit every time”.

Sarah & Angela were elated to be chosen as finalists for the 2012 BIBAS (Be Inspired Business Awards) as Business Woman of the Year and Most Inspiring Business. They were especially pleased as they were up against many very large, long established organisations and their company was only 2 years old…what an accolade!

We rent out multi-use business units with various sizes available for retail, manufacture, services and artist studios. Shop owners pay competitive rents. Heskin Farmers Market has its own website, with a dedicated page to each business and businesses are helped with marketing services. We also have ample free parking & entry, fast broadband access plus an excellent onsite tea room.

  • We boast short term rental agreements and some areas don’t require manning – with a minimal commission charge.  All rentals include services and business rates are free of charge at present, dependant on government legislation.
  • We have an ongoing full marketing mix campaign to maximise impact including radio, online, email and print advertising, an ever growing customer database with regular and new customers as well as coach parties on a regular basis.
  • We have a policy of non-duplication of products within the centre as we like every shop to be unique to enhance customer experience.

Joining us for breakfast, lunch or just a snack?

Then the Two Birds Tea Room makes an excellent stop for lunch offering toasties, sandwiches, wraps, soups & salads using fresh local produce & home cooked meats. Relax next to the wood burning stove in winter or patio area or coffee cabins in summer, enjoy great coffee, wine & beers and a catch up with friends. For Afternoon Tea bookings please call 01257 452390. The Barn Cafe located next to our craft studio, The Crafty Potter, has a home from home feel & serves a hearty breakfast, hot meals plus hot & cold drinks.
